What Happens Now?

What happens to a runner when she isn't running?

Well, I'll tell ya - it ain't pretty.

  1. She uses the word "ain't."

  2. She is tired and it shows in her eyes.

  3. She is grumpy and snaps at everyone.

  4. She shows up to work with no make up on and clothes that don't match.

  5. She eats TWO huge cookies in one sitting.

  6. Her stomach blows up like the biggest muffin you've ever seen.

  7. Her self esteem plummets.

  8. Her life falls apart.

  9. She loses touch with reality.

  10. She ends up at "The Betty."

Ok, I'm only at phase 6. But I'm scared people. I'm scrrrrrd. I can't get it back. I'm just out of touch with the runner inside. She's slipping away. How do I find her?

Go outside see the GORGEOUS weather and think about how amazing it will be to run. Start back small and you will be back to your same strength in a week or so. But you can't get out of it unless you go out and do it! :-)

Hmmm...... This is a slippery slope, Miss POM. Maybe you could convince yourself to simply go for a 10 minute walk RIGHT NOW. You'll get outside, breathe in that fresh air, and maybe the old hankerin' for a run will find you... And then you'll return to your desk in your mis-matched clothes and clockwatch until you can get home and lace up.

PS: the label for this post cracked me up.

That didn't come out the way I wanted. Anyway, 3rd comment...now I'm stalking.

Sorry, slow day at le office.

I've been there a couple of times. Yeah, it's hard when you lose motivation. I've used some of the following ways to get back into it:

- bribe myself with spa treatments, running clothes/shoes, purses, something you really like. Say to yourself..."if I rack up so and so miles"...I can have this. Kind of like use miles as points for something. The more expensive something is the more points I need to rack up. Doesn't even have to be expensive just something you really love.

- get a training program from hal higdon's running site or anywhere and try to stick to the plan as best as possible.

- join a running group in your area.

- Sign up for races more frequently so that there isn't a period of no races. People have a hard time just running for the heck of it. I think it is better to be training for something.

- If all else fails, perhaps your body just needs rest. I think if you really enjoy running, sooner or later you will want to do it again after you've had some time to rest. I've been running for 10 years and I remember there were 2 years out of those 10 that I just didn't want to run so I stopped but I always started up again. Maybe you can go and bike some trials on the weekends for a while. Get some sun and enjoy the approaching Spring. If that doesn't get you going, just think in a few months, bathing suit season will be coming around and that always gets me back into the gym.

I agree with madison's last comment - if you're not motivated, don't fret.

The runner in you will always be deep inside...maybe she just needs a break.

I took November-January off. Now that I'm back into running, I'm glad I took a break. If I would have muscled through and forced myself to run, I would have gotten burned out and would probably be on the couch eating Cheetos and Bon-Bons at this very moment. :)

If you find your motivation, please share with the class! I have to motivate myself DAILY, and that's no lie (even though I am a beginner runner!). After working all day I just want to come home, read, relax, blog, veg...
But you'll get back on track. Nobody gets to be as good a runner as you are by quitting. Get back on the wagon.

Ahhhh, run 2 miles. Like right now. Do it. The first step out the door is the hardest. After that you will be so glad and proud that you did and so motivated to get back out more. I also looked at my numbers for the month with just a few days left, that motivated the $hit out of me. :D

Go out and run, sista!

It's quite the mystery where the motivation goes, isn't it? Sometimes running just comes naturally and other times it seems like the Worst Hobby Ever. But you'll get it back -- I know it.

Hell, I'm stuck on 6 and still running my ass off. No worries.

Go buy yourself a cool running gadget that you've always wanted and use it religiously. The more expensive, the better. Heck, charge it and only pay the minimum balance each month just to get the additional rush of "GOD I HAVE TO USE THIS" to guarantee optimum running motivation.

Ya, I'm nuts. Ain't it great.

It is the first run that is the hardest! After that you will get back into the groove, just force yourself and Big G to get back out there.

Run, if even for 10 minutes :-) You'll find my dear!

I say just kick back. I have a sneaking suspicion that your hidden runner isn't that far gone. You have too much invested to quit cold turkey.

Run and taste those endorphins and you will be back! :>)

I have been too busy with the other types of workouts to get any runs in lately and I have been ITCHING!!! I have my sites set on Friday though :) You'll find your mojo...it won't stay gone long.

Almost forgot - Your vacation looked amazing! Right up my alley...sun, sand, water and booze. Really doesn't get much better, huh?

TonyP said...

:( - Hang in there. When I go through a stage like that, I take a few days off, then just go out for a short run, maybe a mile or two at a time. The itch eventually comes back.

11. You talk about yourself in the third person.

Go out and run before it's too late!

Sarah said...

When I get to this stage, the only thing to do is listen to good old Nike and JUST DO IT. Strap on your shoes and get your butt out there! You KNOW how good it will feel!

Heather said...

Agreed. Get out there and tell yourself you only have to run for 10 minutes. Step awaayyyy from the wine. Though the cookies sound awesome.

Susan said...

You find her by running! :)

Mendy said...

Like others said, once you get out there, your mojo will be found! You're in a funk right after your vacation, and it's okay. I remember feeling almost all of those things when I was in a LONG no-running rut.

I hear you girl. I am in the same boat myself. Unfortunately, my stomach is blowing up for another reason (check out my latest update). But I should still be running, but just can't get the lazy out of me.
