This WILL be the week that I finally reach my goal of 20 miles per week. I came close last week, but fell a few short. And close only counts in ...?? What does "close" count in?
During my morning run I was seriously freezing my butt off. My nose was burning, eyes watering, lips chapping, teeth aching, calves cramping from the frigid cold and wind. But when I got to my turn around point and the wind was at my back - it was awesome! I give you cold weather runners "mad props." I don't know how you do it.
I kept picturing the football players in the second game yesterday- I forgot the teams, because, well I really don't care - I think they had blue or green on. But I remember how cold they looked, especially one of the coaches. His face was seriously PINK and frosty. I thought if they can do THAT, then I can run a measly 3.2 miles in the 50 degree weather. HA- I'm a wuss. I know 50 degrees is not cold to some of you, that's why I'm givin' ya "Mad Props."
My other running thoughts were very spiritual today. It's difficult to articulate, but it was about my recent struggles and how metaphorically I feel like we are going against the wind. But I know that there is a lesson to be learned from these challenges. And I know that someday it will turn around and the wind will be my back. I tried to explain it to the Captain afterwards but he just stared at me, blankly. Maybe such discussions should be saved for another time, like NOT 6:30 in the morning.
Here are the numbers:
Miles: 3.2
Time: 32:1
Calories: 356
Morning Weight: 139
Time: 32:1
Calories: 356
Morning Weight: 139
Yes, my weight jumped back to 139. Saturday morning, it was 136. I slipped a little this weekend - a burger at the hospital and homemade nachos during football game watching - and BAM - back up 3 pounds. I swear -that is why I ALWAYS have to think about this shit.
Super busy at work - so I'll read blogs tonight from home.

And most of them didn't even have long sleeved shirts on. WTH?!!? That's cra-zay!
His face was seriously chapped or something, poor guy.
I have to watch my diet that close too, it sucks but it is what I was dealt. I call them 1lb decisions. Hang in there, you'll get it back.
I'm enjoying the Karate Kid philosophical views. Seriously! I once took a long hike in Muir Woods and walked uphill for forever and thought, this feels a LOT like my job. Walking uphill for no reason. No view. No doing it so the downhill would be easier (it was a pointless trail that was basically just uphill). And at one point, I thought, you know, I think I'm just going to turn around. Two years later, I'm still at this stinkin job, but hey, I'm working to get out of it. Things are progressing...
Nice job on the miles!
This is surely your week for 20! I can feel it!
I love your song of the day!!
Also, I also die in 50 degree weather. I went on a walk today in San Clemente at 11am and was freezing. Hahah.
Huh? 50 degrees. I am longing for that. This morning was 14 degrees. Please send me the 50 degrees in my area, I would die for it.
Got a good tip.. if you are going to run outside that is colder than 50 degrees, the secret is to put vaseline on your face. It works well and you won't be like the football players in Green Bay that you saw last night.
Horse Shoes. Only counts in horse shoes....I have no idea why I know that.
You are going to do it this week!!
(but I have to say, I would kill for 50 degrees right now).
LOVE Rilo Kiley!
Nice run ... in the 50 degree weather! That wind can be nasty.
It was finally above zero today... reaching 1 degree! Friday it is supposed to be 27, so if I can get that sunday, I will be choosing to run outdoors rather than on the thrillmill! ;)
Thanks for letting me know I found Pandora from your blog!! I updated mine with a shout out. That site is fantastic.
You poor girl, 50 degrees running, how can you dress for those brutal elements? I think the high temps in here for the upcoming week don’t total 50! The important thing is you ran.
Seems like your run today was just as beneficial to the body as it was the spirit. Hope you have a great week and I am sure you will hit 20!
No worries you will get the weight off this week....or when we run our undertrained half mary. You HAVE to burn more calories when you are undertrained...haha. Think of it that way...we are burning more calories running that race than those that trained for months and months!
Yea, I know the coach your talking about. It looked way too cold for me. They could not have paid me to be at that game, and I care.
I just laughed so hard when you tried to have a deep convo with the Cap at 6:30AM.
The 3 pounds has to be a salt lick it will go back in a day or 2 no worries. I look at nachos and the scale jumps 5! Dayum now I want nachos..ugh!
Just saw you left me a comment and I wanted to come over and say thank you, it's good to know I'm not the only nerd around! Thanks for the kind words, I can't wait till marathon day for that proud moment. Enjoy So-Cal, I miss it so much (went to college in San Diego).
I'm a bit of a wimp in this weather too. So, I understand.
I have learned that the older I get, I have to watch EVERY single item I eat. It sucks. I can eat well for a week, drop a few lbs and 1 measley fattening meal will undo all that I did.
I've been such a slacker on the weightloss challenge. I need to get back involved.
I loved this: "I forgot the teams, because, well I really don't care - I think they had blue or green on." That's kind of how I feel about football.
(And I suspect some of that gain was retaining water from the salty stuff--I doubt you ate 3 pounds worth of extra calories, so hopefully most of it'll come right off again.)
I agree with Crabby, I'm SURE you didn't eat 3lbs of food this weekend, but it sounds like it was pretty salty - hello water retention! Load up on water to flush it out and cut back on salt for a couple days, it will disappear!
Packers vs. Giants. Giants won in overtime. See, since I'm a GUY, I pay attention to these things.
"Close" also counts in hand-grenades...
The Bag Lady can certainly relate to the weight gain thing. She can weigh herself first thing in the morning, have a cup of coffee, go to the bathroom, get back on the scale and GAIN 3 lbs. What's with that? Oh, maybe my scale's broken, you say? No-o-o-o, the Bag Lady has been this way for-f*cking-ever!! Frustrating as hell. Is there anyone else in the world who gains weight after she goes to the bathroom? Sheesh.
Hand grenades AND horse shoes. That's where close counts.
I know 3500 calories are supposed to equal a pound, but for me, it's more like 1000 cals. Not water weight either - it seems to stay on. So I definitely know what you mean about having to watch every bite closely - it sucks!!!
I try to explain my random thought to J sometimes too, usually with the same results. Blank stares. Haha, oh well.
Good job on getting out in those frigid temps. I think 50 degrees is freezing too!
