I am enjoying recovery. To me recovery means drinking wine at night, sleeping in and being totally lazy. As much as I adore all of these things, there is no way in HELL I can wait 26 days to run again. I think I'm afraid that I will just become super lazy and get stuck in a rut.
I went for a walk last night and it felt good. I had to hold myself back from starting to jog. I had The Captain’s iPod with his 1990s rocker music on it, so that helped me to not break out in a run.
So the plan is that I am going to go to the gym on Saturday to just ride the bike and do some upper body weights. I think I will try to wait at least another week to actually run.
But running keeps me sane and is cheaper than therapy so for the sake of everyone around me, I need to get back to it.
Happy Friday everyone!

Did someone tell you not to run for 26 days? I've heard it takes that long to really recover, but not that you shouldn't run. In fact, one of the best things for soreness is doing a slow jog to get all that lactic acid movin. No racing, for sure, but I don't think you have to abstain (but maybe there is something I don't know about!).
I think there are different schools of thought out on that one. Hal says 2-3 weeks. Others have said more. But I think at least 2, as long as there are no outstanding aches and pains.
My friend had a 5k PR a week after her first marathon. I did a short run two days after my first one. I think it just all depends on how you feel :-) (although I also think recovery is great excuse for relaxing for a bit!)
Load your ipod with talking instead of music, that will keep you walking.

"recovery means drinking wine at night, sleeping in and being totally lazy."
This is exactly how I like to do 'recovery' too.
There's nothing wrong with doing a little running while you recover and like Nancy said, it can actually help speed up the process. I do a "reverse taper", slowly working up the mileage again as the days and weeks go by, but being careful not to push the limits with workouts that are too stressful. Now's a great time to do yoga, too... really gives those muscles a chance to stretch and heal.
Loved your pictures, by the way! You look mahvelous, dahling.
Keep enjoying your recovery... you certainly deserve it!
HOLY MOTHER!! How the heck did I get so behind on your blog? First CONGRATS!!! Second you look totally hot before the death run LOL. I don't know about anyone else but I put NO effort in what I look like before running and if you didn't put any effort in, then I hate you even more :P
Enjoy recovery chica!!! You rock!!!
I don't think you even need a full 2 weeks off. A week, maybe, and if you WANT more, go ahead, but I think 7 days are enough. But that's just me. You don't have to recover for 2 weeks after a 20 miler, right?
Oh my my. I've taken forever to check in on you and learn about your first marathon experience. I'm so happy for you!! It also was nice to relive Long Beach since I did that race a few years ago, only with a much worse experience and outcome.
As for recovery, I think once you feel ready, you can run, just take it easy (you'll see...you won't be able to run hard anyway) and continue doing that until the three-week window is up. Then you can train in earnest again. In the meantime, keep soaking up those awesome-sized mixed drinks!!
I think I am going to try a run this weekend too, although my knees are killing me, so we'll see.
I am with you on the recovery means drinking, being lazy and eating! I feel like I have gained 10lbs just from beer alone this past week!
