Fashionably Flexible

I'm feeling discombobulated again.

One of the main reasons #1 on Ze Plan was to be 'fashionably flexible' is because being flexible is something I really struggle with (mentally, not physically. I'm actually pretty physically flexible for a runner).

My normal schedule has been:

Mon = 4 miles
Wed = Farteks (usually 4 to 5 miles)
Fri = Long, Slow Distance Run (LSD)
Sun = 5 to 6 miles

This is perfecto because the the only time that I run back to back days in a row are Sun/Mon and those are both just mellow/short runs. I'm really not trying to over train and get injured again, hence the reason I don't want to run two days in a row.

But this week is totally jacked up. My Sunday night run had me all screwy and tired so I missed my Monday morning run. I ran Tues. I couldn't wake up this morning. I must run Thur and therefore don't want to do my LSD run on Fri. Now I have to do it Saturday, which means I can't go out on Fri night.

ARGHHHHHHHHHHHH - be FLEXIBLE POM, be FLEXIBLE.

Ok, I'm gonna make it happen, don't you worry. (I know you're probably going to lose sleep over all of this.) I'm thinking the long run will be Sat morning. Then I can go on my date Thur night (hopefully he will fit into my schedule).

Told you guys I'm crazy. It will probably get worse before it gets better, kinda like acne.

LUCKILY I am on a BIKRAM BINGE and lovin' every minute of it. It's helping keep the full blown crazy at bay. Kinda.

By the way, my friends, THIS (see below) is the SHIT I have to deal with on a regular basis at my place of employment. What you can't see: brownie bites, assortment of mini cookies, coffee cake, etc, etc.

Yes, I did indulge a bit. I tried to stick with fruit and cheese only, but a brownie bite might have slipped and fallen in my mouth. Ok, maybe a cookie, too. Luckily the Invisalign is back in and no more snacking can happen.

Damn, I wish someone taught bikram around here.

One day, I too, will think of a 5 or 6 mile run as a short little run. sigh

Hmm, tough one! I like Sat am long runs because then it is out of the way for the weekend, but isn't it annoying how you have to plan going out around it and all? Do you usually do them Friday morning or afternoon/evening? Maybe you can do tomorrow's run an easy one instead and then still do the LSD on Friday. Pick up on the fartleks next week?
Good luck :)

Change is the best way to train your body... shock it into shape by keeping away from routines.

Thats what 'they' say anyway. LOL

I am making a blogger quilt and am asking all my favorite bloggers to dig down deep and find your creative side. Would you be willing to quilt a 12" X 12" square? Make it reflect who you are!

I am such a sucker for water cooler snacks!! Working from home can actually be MUCH worse. I can actually CONCOCT the things I crave... I am not limited to what is around the office. UGH!

This is the most hilarious sentence in the whole post:

"hopefully he will fit into my schedule"

I laughed because of the a) total identification with it and b) because this seems antithetical to enjoying another person's company. (Another reason for the self-imposed dating hiatus-- when fitting dates in started to feel like, well, "fitting dates in," I started to wonder if this actually made anyone feel like they were an appreciated part of my day or one more thing to get onto the schedule.)

Ah, the joy of being a slightly neurotic overachiever. (Of course, I speak only of myself. You may be a totally laid back slacker who experiences none of these phenomena...)

The OCD in me wants to give you a hug and tell you to embrace the neurotic, crazy ass side of yourself. You're more fun with that little bit 'o extra personality. ;)

Have fun on your date! Maybe you can have him run with you! Then you'll be all hot and sweaty and, and... Okay, I'm done. (and obviously single.)

The date will be date #3 with a guy that needs a nickname. I am still not sure about him, so we'll see. But he doesn't RUN. Maybe he can ride the bike as I run - it is a 14 miler. hmmmm

Ooo...I just got very hungry looking at that picture. Evil woman! :)

Mmmm...cheese plate. I miss cheese so.

Today I was presented with a scheduling disaster for the next month which makes my plan of running my LSD on Sundays maybe not the best idea. Pffftt!

Don't let it throw you off your stride, just pick upw here you left off, don't try and make up the mileage, that never works. As for the cheese....yum!

I am seriously worried about my flexibility. I need to hop on the yoga train!

Typically, if I'm training for something, I treat missed runs as if I didn't miss them and I continue on with the training as if the blip in the schedule didn't happen. Because moving shit around can get stressful. Plus, the most important run of the week in marathon training is the long run, why waste your time fretting on getting a 5 miler in when its the long run that takes precedence? So as long as that stays intact, I see no reason to change things up. It's the quality of the runs that counts; not the quantity.

Kevin said...

Im with Jess on this. I have always heard its best to move on if you miss a workout. By trying to move things around, you run into more chance of overdoing it or getting injured

Ouch - I don't mind the little runs squished together but anything near my longie cramps my style :-(.

It's just a bummer you don't have the cooler weather like up here... then you can go out Friday and just oomph the Saturday run to the night time.

Good luck :-)

I think Jess has fantastic advice!! All that extra food is as bad as my husband. He asked me yesterday why he has to suffer just because I am on a diet. Because, that is why. ;>)

Those are some good looking eats. At my place of employment, I'm stuck rummaging through everyone's lunch bags when left unattended in the frig to get my snacks.

Jess said...

Wow that is a whole crapload of temptation that I would have a hard time dealing with too. Props to you for only indulging a little bit.

And I love your plan of long runs on Fridays. Totally saves your weekends for fun. I may have to consider that when I get back from this injury.

Now that would be tough for me. Good thing you have Invisalign. :D

aren't offices wonderful??

LOL you make me laugh... sounds just like what goes on in my head! i had to reschedule this week too due to the freaking smoke! i have no doubt you will figure it out and be right on track next week :)

I hate when that SHIT falls into my mouth. Damn.

Don't stress about the schedule... the nice thing about being flexible is you don't or shouldn't have to fret over a change or bump in the road! :)

Yes POM be flexible. I'm so jealous of the bikram. I can't wait to get back into my usual routine post-baby.

Glad the invisalign are going great!

you know, i'd be freaking out too if my routine had been disrupted like that. so you're not alone.

and where can i get one of those straight jacket bears??

stop obsessing.

that food looks yummy.

Have fun on your date tomorrow!

At least there were healthy options mixed with some sweets. Good luck with the 14 miler. Don't worry about mixing the schedule up. This time you are more aware of your body and are intune with not overtraining.

You can post this letter up at the food area. :)

Man that food temptation is tough. Way to give in to the tiny pices of grapes overthere. You will work it out you are the most flexible runner I "know" Miss Bikram.

I am LMAO at LSD you don't want to know what the hub has that an acronym for.

Ugh...I totally feel you on the office snacks. We have a snack table and it's out of control sometimes and the candy dishes at the front desk. I just can't handle it sometimes!

i'm a fairly flexible runner but i do get a wee bit annoyed when my schedule gets messed up and i have to rethink when to run and when to play. that said, all your talk bout running is making me upset that i haven't run in 3 freaking long weeks 'coz 1 gave myself 2 weeks off and then i fell sick :(

how do you manage to gain weight while marathon training? i lose weight and i don't want to!

That food selection looks great. Must be a west coast thing. All we have are year old granola bars and 10 year old pretzel sticks. Otherwise we are on our own. I have my own stash of pistachios (woo hoo).

I would totally fall off the wagon if my work had a spread like that!!

Man that food looks good. And you ARE flexible- you can figure it all out!

I hate having to be flexible and your training plan makes me realize I need to get my act together in terms of my schedule... before I got sick I was running 14 and 15 days on in a row with nothing less than 4 miles of hills... no wonder I am dying... You are also inspiring me to drag myself back to yoga as I used to be flexible as a runner- not anywhere else in my life, but running for sure....

That food is just wrong.. my office all about fruit, kashi go lean, FF yogurt and giant green salads... maybe not as much fun, but certainly not as snackaliscious

Kiki said...

I wanna work where you do....is that wrong???
